Start of a packed semester

By fireball | September 10, 2011

A new school year is underway.

Three weeks of the fall semester have already gone by. In addition to packing lots of learning into every school day, we have packed our whole elementary school into the high school gym and balcony while the other building is completely renovated. There is also a temporary house in one half of the gym where all the construction workers are living. It is a very different situation, but we are off to a good start.

Jori Grant and Catherine Thomascheske have joined Joe Quinn, Willis Ferenbaugh, and Principal Sandra Quinn on the teaching staff.  Becky Kunayak and Andrea Soolook are helping to teach, Kyle Okpealuk is the cook, JR Seetok is working with the elementary school, and Orville Ahkinga and Dennis Soolook are keeping things running.

Look for more pictures of our current sardine setup ~~ coming soon.

And here is a photo of a barge delivering building materials in late August.

A random webcam view from Diomede showed up on my desktop – I’ve been researching your village for the past hour and am enthralled. I am a teacher as well and always love to hear stories about students and their learning. I hope you continue to post!

How long do you go to school ? We can have 2 inches of snow in NC and the city locks down. How many kids go to your school

    Hello:

I first learned of your island and community while watching the Discovery show about Era Airlines. (Flying Wild Alaska) I became interested in your school through that show. I am a middle school math teacher in Stillwater, Minnesota. I appreciate your website and all the great educational things you do. Keep it up! The internet has surely made this a small world. I will keep track of you and who knows, maybe some day I will come to visit. Is there anything I can help you with?

    Hi all,

Watching your webcam is a simple way to be virtually there.
I like your precious, cold, wild island.

    Hi there!
I learned about your school through a couple of shows on the discovery channel. I am a teacher who lives and works in the big city of Chicago, so your location and way of life is absolutely fascinating to me!
