A Great New Start to the Year
By sahkinga1 | September 28, 2010
We’ve had a great start to the new year. This year, a few new ECE students and two new teachers joined our school. The new teachers and teachers from the previous year arrived on the Inaliq crab boat two days before school started. The new teachers are Miss Beck from Tennessee and Miss Lee from California. Along with the season, teachers, students, and the new year, herds and herds of walruses have been passing through from north, heading down to the south. This fall season, about a hundred walruses climbed on the rocks around the first cliff on north side of Diomede. Twelve walruses were caught while they were resting on the rocks. Not only the walruses were exciting, the weather was beautiful. The sun stood out for at least five days and many of the students got to go hiking over the weekend and people got to go back and forth from Diomede to Wales by boat. During the day the middle and high school are reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. The book is about an African-American family that are being treated unkindly. The students have been learning a lot about segregation and equal rights from the book. Other than that, wrestling and co-ed mixed volleyball has started and cheerleading will start soon.

Hi Diomede, my name is Amiee and my husbands name is Orion we live in Illinois. We were bored and we were searching stuff about Alaska on the net and we started reading about your island. We never knew anything about it and started reading things and found it so interesting. It astounds us of how different things are there. I know that your island is apart of the United States but there are so many things that are different and not available there it’s confusing. I think that they should build a continental bridge or a tunnel for sure there. I dont mean to sound negetive its just that there are so many things that should be at your finger tips. We were wondering if there was some kind of hospital there and if not what happens if someone needs medical attention thats not an emergency but maybe has diabetes or chronic pain or something what happens? Is there any crime there? I was reading that the grocery store has limited things available what kinds of things do you have? Is there anything you wish you had at the store but dont? I know it sounds like a weird question but does anyone there smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol. I know maybe people dont really do that but it is legal and that stuff is sold in stores everywhere here but do you get it there? What about like disability money if needed or a link card? What about a car or driving, they teach you how to drive when you are 16 years old a sophomore in high school, 10th grade what happens there? Being reg. voter? What about money, is the value of money the same? I seen that taxes are paid with ivory and not money how does that work? I just have so many questions it sounds very interesting. I wish I could visit sometime. Im sorry I asked so many questions it just sounds really interesting, thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you! -Amiee
