Good Afternoon, This post is to inform everyone of schedule differences this week for Diomede School. There is a district-wide early out on Thursday, March 6 due to all school district teachers having to attend a state-sponsored training that afternoon for state testing. There will also be Saturday school on March 8 to make up for the school cancellation on January 10 when water was initially out. Thank you and have a great day!

If your information was affected, and your email address was stored in PowerSchool, you should receive a communication from PowerSchool within the coming weeks. We also understand that PowerSchool is providing notification of this event on its website and to media and state regulators. Because this occurred at PowerSchool, we do not have any additional details about the incident or the investigation at this time. We continue to monitor updates from PowerSchool and will share those updates as they become available. 2️⃣ PowerSchool has released a public statement and a FAQ section and can be accessed here: https://www.powerschool.com/security/sis-incident/ 1️⃣ The PowerSchool breach mentioned in this letter was not isolated to our district but part of a nationwide incident affecting multiple school districts across Alaska and other states that used their hosting services. While we are monitoring the situation closely, PowerSchool is conducting a thorough investigation to assess the scope and impact and will provide an update once their investigation is finished. PowerSchool has committed to providing identity protection and monitoring services as needed. BSSD has notified our cyber insurance and district leadership and it is important to note that this data breach did not occur because of action or lack of action by any of the employees of Bering Strait School District. This data breach occurred through the support tools that PowerSchool (the company) uses to assist districts when they call in for technical support. Please read the attached letter regarding the recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, a software vendor which provides our Student Information System (SIS).

Diomede school was recently informed that we are no longer identified as being a Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school. These schools are the 5% of title 1 schools with the lowest index scores in all of Alaska. Diomede school has been identified as part of this group for at least 6 years, but this is no longer the case. These identifications are re-evaluated every fall by Alaska's Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) and are based on the previous academic year (2023-2024). This is an amazing achievement and Diomede school wanted to recognize the hard work of our students and staff in making this possible. We could not have achieved this without the commitment of our students to study hard and be in school. We want to recognize and thank our parents who have supported their students by getting them to school and encouraging their participation in after school tutoring and reading programs. We also would not be celebrating this without the commitment of all of our staff to support academics. We especially could not have done it without the hard work of our our principal and reading specialist teacher last year who worked diligently with staff to implement new instructional programs to support students in their learning during the day, and especially for spearheading our after-school reading program for early elementary students. Diomede school has amazing, hard working students, and we applaud your commitment to learning and cannot wait to see how much more you grow.
